What a start to the year!
These last weeks have been quite the ride, with many announcements  and developments concerning the future of the OGL, the license that  powers Fateforge and allows us to expand on it with the Creatures  bestiary series.
We have been mulling the situation over and making plans, and we can  now tell you about our projects' next steps! This is a historic moment  for role-playing, and a major one for our studio. Things are moving  fast, and we already see many opportunities emerging. The creation of RPG ESU (European RPG Studios Union) and the OpenDnD movement are clear indicators of this. We also decided to make our core books available as Pay What You Want on DriveThruRPG.  RPG is all about being together, creating together, sharing. We will  discuss these initiatives in more detail through this update.
After weeks of confusion and an unprecedented mobilization from the  community, the owner of the OGL announced that it would remain  untouched: "We are leaving OGL 1.0a in place, as is. Untouched." Even better, the core 5E ruleset is now under Creatives Commons : "We are also making the entire SRD 5.1 available under a Creative Commons license."
This is a huge victory for the whole community, but also for content  creators like us. THANK YOU for your huge support through this.
Once again, without you, we could not exist. This morning we felt an incredible sense of relief.
Several years of work were jeopardized overnight. We feared we would  lose our jobs. But you mobilized. The community stood up and was heard.
It is difficult to put our gratitude into words.  What you have done is an incredible feat. THANK YOU forever for this, we  will never forget!
Through the following news, we will give a full update on our projects and the future of our studio and Fateforge, our 5E RPG.
This is a very big update. A lot of things happened! But if you don't have time to read this huge thing, here is the tl;dr:
Several bonuses unlocked during the funding campaign were added to your BackerKit accounts!
First of all, the Graphic Kit: it will allow you to format your homemade game aids and scenarios in the purest style of the Fateforge books. This Graphic Kit can be used freely for any non-commercial publication, whether it's to wow your players with an in-game document you've printed for them, or to let everyone know about your next creation in the world of Eana!
Next up are five new scenario templates, gathered in the Incidents collection. All the mini-scenarios are now unlocked, and we hope you'll have some great adventures around Eana with them!
Finally, there's the Grotesque Feast. As we've already mentioned, what was supposed to be a "mini-module" has gradually grown into something more like a mini-campaign. Today, its writing and proofreading is complete, and the layout is well underway. We thank you again for your patience as we were bringing this adventure to the same level of quality as the other books in the line. More information on the finalization of this last bonus very, very soon.
When the OGL affair happened in early January, we made this decision.
We dedicate our lives to creating these books because we love  role-playing and what it can do for people. It is this love that guides  our action, and not mercantile interest. That's why we decided to make  the Fateforge Tetralogy available as Pay What You Want.  This four-book series spans over 1,500 pages and includes Adventurers, the core book with an expanded version of the 5E game system; Grimoire, the book of magic; Creatures, a comprehensive bestiary; and Encyclopedia, which depicts the world of Eanaâmore than enough material to play  exciting games of your making! Our purpose is to share this core set  with as many people as possible. Producing these books took several  years of work. Now we want to share them as much as possible with the  community that has supported us so much.
We would also be very happy if this allowed new people to give role-playing a shot and journey together across fabulous lands.

This brings us to our next point...
The beginning of this year was quite rocky and intense, with many  announcements regarding the future of OGL. This has led to a lot of  rethinking of our plans.
We have postponed our Kickstarter for Shadows of Esteren (You can sign up here for the KS pre-launch page if you would like to receive an email later in the year when we launch  the project) and will instead launch a Kickstarter for the next  Fateforge release: Encyclopedia Volume 2. Now that the SRD is under  Creative Commons, the urgency to launch is less intense, but we  ultimately decided to stay the course and still give priority to  Encyclopedia 2.
The second Encyclopedia volume, Encyclopedia: Netherworld, is almost done. The writing is fully complete, and illustrations are in progress. This will be our next crowdfunded book, with the campaign starting on Monday 6th! Sign up on the KS pre-launch page to be informed of the launch.
The last few weeks have been very stressful. If you want to support  us, sign up for this pre-launch page. This will reassure us because yes,  we are afraid that the chaos around the OGL has turned players off and  is even driving them away from us. Thank you đ
Encyclopedia: Netherworld will span 350-400 pages of 5E-compatible content, providing ample material for memorable  adventures in underground regions stretching beneath land and sea.  Sometimes frightening, sometimes sublime, always mysterious, the  Netherworld features iconic cities, strange and exotic locations,  thrilling encounters, exciting adventure hooks, and wondrous magic items.
We initially planned to launch this project later in the year, when  the PDF would be fully complete. At present, though all texts are in  their final version, certain illustrations are still in progress. At the  end of the campaign, backers will get a beta PDF version of the book  with all the Encyclopedia texts, with updated versions of the file being  released as more illustrations are completed.
Several other books are works in progress. Some are at a very advanced stage, while others are still in their infancy.
In the chaotic OGL context, it was of paramount importance that we  pre-release as much content as possible before the license was  deauthorized. For a month, we have been working so hard to move forward  with the completion of two more books of the Fateforge series: the second volume of Grimoire, and Moons of Eana.
We will stick to this plan and offer them as PDFs for the next campaign.
Along with the second volumes of Creatures and Encyclopedia, the two aforementioned books will form the second Fateforge Tetralogy.  We hope that it will have as bright a future as its forebear, which was  graced by an ENNIE Award in the Best Writing category at last year's  Gen Con, making for quite the capstone to an incredible adventure that  started in 2016.
As for the future of Fateforge beyond this second Tetralogy, more long-term developments will depend on how the OGL  shapes up. We like the 5th Edition, and we would have liked to continue  experiencing it with you, in this augmented version we have been  working on for nearly eight years now. We have been considering carrying  on with Fateforge, but powered by a different  system. Beyond the engine the game runs on, sharing more of the Eana  setting is what we really want.
At the time we are writing this, the team is working on several books  beyond the second Tetralogy. Texts have been written and illustrations  drawn, but these WIPs aren't as advanced. Should the prospect of a new  game engine come to pass, we will discuss it with you. From the very  start of this adventure, we have been building this series alongside  you, and we will keep doing so.
Since its foundation more than 10 years ago, Studio Agate has always  pursued the same goals: to share this wonderful medium that is  role-playing games and to protect the creators who make them. We are  convinced that role-playing games foster imagination, creativity, and  human bonding, and that they deserve to be known and experienced by as  many people as possible. Creating jobs in the role-playing game industry  in France is a blessing and a source of pride for us. We are honored  and inspired by the support and resourcefulness of the role-playing  community.
Fateforge is a passion project that began in 2016. With the  conclusion of the recent events, we now know that we can continue our  work on this series based on the OGL. Or we could also stop there. After  several years of working on a project, a creator always wonders whether  they should continue or leave well enough alone. This time, we would  like to ask you for your opinion and help us make that choice.
Fateforge is a full RPG,  powered by an augmented 5E ruleset. The core books contain everything  you need to play and that is why we call this system 5.5. The  Fateforge Tetralogy is already complete and is available as Pay What You Want on DriveThruRPG.
One thing is for sure: we have no intention of moving to 6E or using a new OGL.
That's how an idea came up, an obvious one: to continue Fateforge, the Creatures series and the Encyclopedia  series, and go on with this 5.5E of our favorite RPG. And more than that, to  license our current content as OGL 1.0a to allow all creators to  continue coming up with content alongside us, all while supporting our  indie studio.

Every new code and map piece unlocks a part the map,  revealing where NaskĂȘ has been, introducing Fateforgeâs rich lore and a  dev diary full of behind-the-scenes material!
On top of that: all backers who complete NaskĂȘâs Journey will receive a reward with their pledge!

The  board game version of Fateforge is coming in September on Kickstarter!  Our friends at Mighty boards are at work and, having tested the  prototype, this game looks to be excellent while being a simple and  immersive way to dive into the world of Eana.

Fateforge: Chronicles of Kaanis a cooperative, campaign adventure for  1 to 4 players with a quick setup and learn-as-you-go rules that can be  played in sessions of as little as 30 minutes!
You will take on the role of heroes venturing out of their forested  homeland to the crowded, opulent city of Easafir with the hope of  freeing an emissary locked up in the Emperorâs palace. Along the way,  you will meet a caste of dubious characters and get dragged into thorny  situations that will require a charming turn of phrase or an arrow to  the head to resolve. This app-driven narrative adventure adapts to your  choices, successes and failures. Each of these choices weaves a  different path through the gameâs sprawling story-branches for a truly  unique experience with each playthrough.
Fateforge: Chronicles of Kaanis a cooperative game that offers a  fresh take on the dungeon crawler genre.  Weâre calling it a dungeon  brawler to emphasize the action-packed combat scenes where a lot happens  in eachround and every fight lasts around 30 minutes. The quick set up  times and condensed combat scenes mean that you will experience multiple  story beats and fights within a single session.  The base rules are  easy to pick-up with new elements added as you progress through the  campaign.
The game is set in Kaan, a region of the fantasy world of Eana  created by Studio Agate. Inspired by the richness and depth of the world  and the gorgeous art that brought it to life, we applied our experience  in board game development to create a unique immersive experience we  hope you will all enjoy!
Fateforge: Chronicles of Kaan will hit Kickstarter in September and will be available in English (Mighty Boards) and French (Studio Agate).

To celebrate the success of our campaign Creatures Volume 2: Netherworld, we announced that we wanted to give a gift to all our returning backers. Tonight, you are more than 4300 on the twin campaigns Kickstarter and Ulule and we are close to 450.000 dollars of funding.Â
It is difficult to express with a simple post here our gratitude towards all of you who make our small studio live and give work to a dozen of people who work there every day. Â Your support makes the difference and we will never stop telling you: thank you, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this!
We organized a small survey to ask your opinion, you were a little more than 1300 to answer and here is what it gives... a pretty close result!
We have good news tonight because, after talking to Backerkit, you will be able to choose what you prefer: either a $5 shipping discount or a gift from a nice selection (each item will have a value between $15 and $20). We'll make our remaining stock available and this will be a great opportunity to complete your collection or make a nice gift if you already have everything!
A short reminder here : If you have backed one of our previous projects, you are concerned. All you have to do is to join the Creatures 2 KS campaign before it ends.
As long as you use the same account (and same email) to support the new Kickstarter, it will be automatic. The pledge manager software will recognize that you are a former backer and will add the gift to your account, whether it is the shipping discount or the item to choose from. Don't worry, if this is not the case, our support will do it manually, just send us a message when the time comes.
